Open call: participants Programmers of the Future - Eye Filmmuseum
New generations of public, programmers and curators are growing up in a fundamentally different and constantly changing society. Equality and inclusion, the need for a different relationship with nature, and rapid innovations in the field of digital culture are a daily reality. To serve a new, more diverse generation of audiences, the cultural field also needs to change. Cultural institutions must adapt and innovate. Eye Filmmuseum has therefore launched Programmers of the Future, a programme for future programmers of cinema and the art of the moving image.
About the job
Programmers of the Future is designed as a bilateral exchange that exemplifies the most progressive and effective educational and cultural practices. Eye Filmmuseum is not only committed to sharing its network, infrastructure and extensive expertise in the field of film history and programming with the recruited participants, but also eager to listen to and learn from them. Moving away from traditional top-down hierarchies is an integral part of our spirit and the way in which we continually strive to innovate. Programmers of the Future is a 10-month course in which the participants dedicate 32 hours of their time per week. During the course, participants come to understand all that they need to know about film programming, while also sharing their own new ideas and inspiring other programmers at the museum. The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects: How to make connections between archival material and contemporary works? How can you analyse the zeitgeist in which a film was made and relate this to the present? What parallels can you draw between cinema and cinematic contemporary art productions? The course functions as an intensive educational project in which the three participants closely work together, follow private classes in programming (reflective, analytical and practical), and participate in studio and museum visits, artist talks and excursions. Participants also work on an individual audio-visual project to be presented at the end of the course. They receive assistance in developing, deepening and realizing their project during the programme.
Dit is wie je bent
Eye Filmmuseum is looking for three ambitious participants to shape the first year of the programme: Programmers of the Future (32 hours per week, 0.83 fte) The call is open to applicants of all nationalities and ages. Eye is committed to diversity in all aspects, provided applicants meet the key profile requirements outlined below. Prospective participants who would like to join are invited to submit their proposal for an individual project on an A4, together with their application. This could be an imagined future project that takes place at Eye Filmmuseum. To be eligible, applicants should have a great passion for film programming as well as proven experience in the cultural field, preferably involving cinema or contemporary art in relation to the moving image. Applications will be assessed on the basis of the overall motivation and experience of the applicant and on the quality, originality and potential impact of the proposal for their individual project. A good command of both spoken and written English is recommended.
Dit is wat je krijgt
The majority of the course takes place at Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. Participants are required to follow the course and develop their project at the museum. They become temporary employees of the Eye Filmmuseum and are financially rewarded as such (€ 1.916 gross, excluding a holiday payment of 8% and end-of-year bonus). The course is scheduled to start in October, 2022.
